Futures

In November, OAYEC held its largest conference to date! Futures 2006, held at the spectacular Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood, attracted 420 delegates and offered 38 workshops. To kick-off the conference, delegates were inspired by a keynote address from Paralympic Gold Medalist Paul Rosen. Paul also stayed to participate in the Take 30 Workplace Challenge, a fun forum which brought youth employment staff together for a series of physical activities and brain-teasers!

For some great conference pictures, see: http://www.oayec.org/conference/gallery

OAYEC recognized four deserving recipients of the 2006 Award of Merit. They were:

  • Eastern Region: Larry Journal (Brockville);
  • Central Region: Megan Thomas (YMCA York Region);
  • South West Region: Lisa Nunn (Focus, Alliston);
  • Northern Region: Jeanne Trembly (YES Nippising);

Tuesday night at Jozo’s was a great party where many of the conference participants enjoyed tunes spun by D.J. Lenny. The conference closed on Wednesday, ending in a powerful address about “paying it forward” from Joanne Klauke-LaBelle, whose work with at-risk youth has brought her world-wide recognition.

OAYEC would like to thank the members of the advisory committee for their contribution to the success of the event and to the members and individuals who made donations. We would also like to thank our Sponsors: Ministry of Training Colleges & Universities; Ontario Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association; Macdonald, Sagar, Manis LLP; Pardons Canada; Canada Career Consortium; Konica Minolta; and Group IT.

We are revving up for 2007! The conference will once again be held at Blue Mountain Resort and will take place November 5 – 7th, 2007. Mark your calendars!

Hire Prospects

Hire Prospects has expanded to B.C.! That’s right, OAYEC's own youth survey outreach service has added six youth employment centers in British Columbia (mostly in the Lower Mainland in and around Vancouver). Welcome to all our new outreach partners!

To celebrate our expansion, over the next three months OAYEC will be completing two online surveys. One survey will focus on youth experiences with safety in the workplace. The other survey will gather opinions on the impacts of the Federal Government cuts to the Summer Career Placement program. Both of these issues impact our membership, our Outreach Partners and the youth population we serve. It is important for organizations like OAYEC to provide up-to-date youth perspectives on issues such as these. Watch your inboxes for news of the next Hire Prospects survey.

Take 30 Workplace Health Challenge

OAYEC’s first Take 30 Workplace Health Challenge concluded with incredible results for our many hundreds of participating staff across Ontario! Take 30 was an extensive five-month long fitness challenge that resulted in 100% of our agency teams measuring significant overall improvements in health, fitness, and energy levels! The Top 10 examples of numerous successes achieved through the Take 30 Workplace Health Challenge are:

  • Innovative Leadership opportunities for all agency staff;
  • Higher personal energy levels at work and at home;
  • Major weight losses;
  • Building a gym inside the workplace;
  • Enhancement of staff cohesion;
  • Continuing to set and reach new health goals for personal and work life success;
  • Joining, and regularly attending local Fitness clubs;
  • Joining Run-Clubs / training for marathons;
  • Creating health-conscious cookbooks;
  • Experiencing more fun at work!

We look forward to our members’ ongoing achievements in their health and fitness initiatives throughout 2007!!
