OAYECE-Update

Introducing OAYEC's new E-Update!

In addition to our monthly “Positioning Bulletins”, OAYEC will be providing our membership and the general public with quarterly updates. The updates will provide an opportunity for OAYEC staff to share announcements and exciting news occurring in their respective projects, as well as for OAYEC to inform you about the actions taken to fulfill OAYEC’s Strategic Plan. We welcome your input, feedback and announcements that you would like to include in this quarterly update. The next update is scheduled to be released the week of September 15, 2007.

Futures

Hope you have your calendar marked!

The 19th Annual OAYEC Conference is taking place at Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood on November 5th, 6th, and 7th, 2007. The program is being developed and the Advisory Committee has been busy helping to develop the program and networking opportunities for you. We have sent out a Call for Presenters but still require workshop presenters so please feel free to send us your suggestions.

We are hoping to have the preliminary program and registration information out to members by June 1st. However, we are accepting pre-registrations from those agencies that wish to do so. Contact the office at (416) 323-9557 for information on rates.

Hire Prospects

Eliminate Your Risk on The Job Safety Survey Update

The Eliminate Your Risk on the Job Safety Survey, was conducted in March by the Hire Prospects program, in partnership with Passport to Safety. The purpose of the survey was to gather youth’s experiences and opinions on safety in the workplace and share them with government decision-makers. Matt Wood presented the preliminary survey findings to the Minister’s Action Group: Venerable Workers Under the Age of 25 on April 5, 2007. The Ministry was interested in the capacity of Hire Prospects to function as a powerful outreach tool.

Through engaging in the Hire Prospects online survey process and working in partnership with our member centres, we collected 641 responses in three weeks! (Our original goal was to collect 500 responses in four weeks!) Due to this fantastic response rate from across Ontario, we wrapped up the survey a week earlier than planned.

This survey was truly successful and we thank our partners for contributing their time and energy to this project. We also would like to take this opportunity to thank the youth who participated in this process and submitted their opinions.

The following table outlines participant contribution by member centers:

EVIDENCE

EVIDENCE has hired a new Consultant, Kristen Roderick to work on the team. Kristen comes to us from the Centre for Research and Education in Human Services, in Kitchener, where she worked for over 5 years as a community-based researcher. Kristen has been involved in over 30 research and evaluation projects across the province, focusing on women’s issues, family support, disability, adult mental health, and immigration. Some of the projects were in communities such as Timiskaming, Brantford, Cochrane, Oxford County and Huron County. Welcome Kristen!

EVIDENCE continues to complete valuable program evaluations to assist the non-profit sector. Lately, EVIDENCE has performed:

  1. An agency-wide evaluation framework for a children's mental health centre serving youth in one of Toronto's high-risk communities, which involves creating a different framework for each of the agency’s 8 programs.
  2. The evaluation of the use of a Ministry-mandated tool for assessing clients at intake, yet again for a children’s mental health centre.

The benefits for the agencies are:

  • Youth and parents have had meaningful and essential opportunities to contribute and have their voices included in agency development
  • Staff from front-line to upper management have begun to understand the connection between program evaluation and strategic planning
  • The agency is acquiring a personalized or individualized definition of evidence-based practice.
