TOPIC FOR July 9, 2007:
Pump Up Your Future
Backgrounder
Maintaining clients’ energy levels and motivation while job hunting is a challenge we face daily at youth employment centres. Well this just got easier since ... Ministry of Health Promotion has approved another year of funding for the second phase of the Take 30 Health Challenge. The program is entitled “Pump Up Your Future” and will provide the opportunity for OAYEC member agencies to integrate a holistic healthy training program to compliment their clients’ job search process. A train the trainer module is in the process of being developed and will be available for use in October. The module will provide tips and training on implementing leadership, nutrition and building a physical activity regime that suits employment centre clients (and staff!). This program is an opportunity to inspire clients and centre staff to be physically active and healthy.
Process
Part One: Completed 2006-2007
TAKE 30 Health Challenge
OAYEC’s first Take 30 Workplace Health Challenge concluded with incredible results for our many hundreds of participating staff across Ontario! Take 30 was an extensive five-month long fitness challenge that resulted in 100% of participating teams measuring significant overall improvements in health, fitness, and energy levels! The Top 10 examples of numerous successes achieved through the Take 30 Workplace Health Challenge were:
- Innovative Leadership opportunities for all agency staff;
- Higher personal energy levels at work and at home;
- Major weight losses;
- Building a gym inside the workplace;
- Enhancement of staff cohesion;
- Continuing to set and reach new health goals for personal and work life success;
- Joining, and regularly attending local Fitness clubs;
- Joining Run-Clubs / training for marathons;
- Creating health-conscious cookbooks;
- Experiencing more fun at work!
Part Two: 2007-2008
PUMP Up Your Future
This program is an extension of the Take 30 Health Challenge. The main goal is to provide member agency clients with concrete tools to maintain their health motivation and energy levels while they look for work.
OAYEC will be encouraging the following principles, shared by the Ministry of Health Promotion, during this exciting program:
Empowerment
We will focus on education, healthy public policy and supportive strategies to enable individuals and communities to improve their health.
Engagement
We will harness the energy and enthusiasm of individuals, organizations, communities, other ministries, and the private sector to create a culture of health and wellbeing for all.
Education
The more people, organizations and communities understand about factors that affect their health, the more likely they are to take steps to improve health.
Population Health
We will work from a population health approach to help improve the health of individuals and communities. To achieve our goals, we must promote healthy and active living for all Ontarians, including those who are most at risk.
Evidence Based
Our programs and services will be evidence-based and build on best practices from research, community experience and cultural knowledge. We will invest in programs that have the greatest impact on health and wellness.
Conclusion
There will be a meeting organized at the OAYEC futures conference in November where interested centres from each region can receive training and implement Pump Up Your Future in their respective programs. Interested centres and individuals should contact OAYEC.
