How do I deal with Homelessness

Homelessness is a three-syllable word for a whole lot of difficulties and problems. After all, if you don't know where you'll spend the night, or where your next meal is coming from it's hard to make finding or keeping a job your highest priority.

Even if you aren't ready to start calling up employers or fine-tuning your resume, you should visit your local employment centre. They might be able to tell you about new supports available in your area (like shelters, foodbanks, clothing banks, supportive housing, etc).

If you can't find or access enough support in your community, don't move to a different city too hastily. Try to find out, maybe from your employment counsellor, what you can expect there. Often places that provide more services have their own unique issues and problems. If you do move away, you will have to take the good with the bad--but you may as well try to avoid unpleasant surprises.

You may want to read the Employment Pathway and the School-to-Work Pathway. They are both about youth who are working to leave the shelter system.

Remember: You can also Ask an Employment Counsellor through our website.
